Claudia Makeup Practice

Having previously created a look like the one I have designed for Claudia, I knew already what I was going to use. Here are the photos of my previous attempt (using my male flatmate- this is not the model I will be using for Claudia):

What isn't present in these photos but what I will be doing for the real look is blue veins under the eyes and around the temples, and duo eyelash glue on the lips. This lip technique is one that I learnt in class; it gives the effect of dry, cracked lips. I would like this for Claudia as she needs to look weak and almost thirsty for blood. Moreover, I would like to contour my model's collar bones so that she looks mildly emaciated.

Products used:
  • Illamasqua matte primer
  • Kryolan Ultrafoundation Palette- G177
  • Kryolan Supracolour palette- Red and yellow (mixed), blue
  • Duo eyelash glue
Equipment used:
  • Powder brush
  • Disposable mascara wand
  • Powder puff
  • Flat shadow brush x2
  • Foundation brush
  • Small, dense eyeshadow brush
  • Thin eyeshadow brush

Mrs Laderman Makeup Practice

Before eyeliner:

At this stage I was still experimenting with the look. Even since I created the face chart I was unsure about what I was going to have between the eyebrows and whether I was going to have the red line going up from the chin to the bottom lip. However in this photo most of the makeup had been done and I was happy with it so far.

With eyeliner and mascara:

This was the point at which I decided not to use the red line on the lips. I felt that it would overpower the purples and not make sense with the look as it is a tribal element and the only other tribal element on the face is white dots. In addition to this, True Blood doesn't include extravagant makeup like that, it focuses more on SFX makeup and so I felt that it would not be appropriate for the show that I have chosen.

Styled:

I am happy with the result of this makeup and how the practice went and believe that it is accurate to my face chart so the only things that are not present on there anymore are the red stripe from the chin to the bottom lip and I am still not sure as of yet what to put between her eyebrows. I would consider a bindi, a gem or more paint.

Styling for Claudia

This is the kind of look I envisaged for Claudia. The character of 'Tara' at the top is wearing a casual outfit with normal blue jeans; representative of most of the outfits that the female characters on True Blood wear. Underneath is a photo of some famous female stars in the early 00's wearing basic outfits too, but I believe that these also fit in with True Blood because the southern settings are usually very behind when it comes to fashion trends and clothes. In addition to this, wearing a vest will reinforce the fact that the weather is hot, and contrasts with the blood that she will be drinking.

Styling for Mrs Laderman

I would like to style Mrs Laderman with a top like this as it is rather stereotypically gypsy and would fit in with the south setting as it is white and airy which is idyllic for hot weather. I would also like a form of bandana like this on the head, which again is stereotypical and also protects the scalp from the sun.

As we are only needing to take mid shots and close ups, I don't have to focus on the bottom so much but if it is showing in the picture, I would like the bottom to conform to the theme of styling that I have created. Therefore trousers or skirts like these can be worn by my model in order to look convincing and realistic.

Jewellery wise, these are looks that inspire me. As a magical gypsy woman, Mrs Laderman will be the type of person that collects trinkets and vintage items which will be presented through her abundance of jewellery. It also adds detail to the outfit that the clothes cannot, and I believe it also is stereotypical of 'hippies' and will fit in with the southern setting.

My Second Character: Claudia

This is my idea for Claudia. At this point, Claudia has watched the movie 'Jennifer's Body', and has adopted some of the main character 'Jennifer Check's attributes temporarily as she was fond of her and her fearlessness. She is at Jennifer's stage where she has no blood or flesh to feed on and so is weak and ill, therefore Claudia has tired, red eyes, translucent skin and dry, cracked lips. She will be given 'Tru Blood' to drink (the fake blood alternative for vampires in True Blood so they do not have to feed off of humans) by Mrs Laderman who is going along with the fact that Claudia believes she needs this, in order to please her. This also enables Claudia to fit well into the series of True Blood because she will have these vampire-like qualities. I intend her outfit to be simple and quite preppy, for example low rise jeans and a casual vest as the characters in True Blood do not really focus on their fashion and it is stereotypical of areas in the deep south to not follow trends and wear plain clothes.

Key word

White Rose is my key word for Claudia. I chose this because it signifies neutrality; its appearance can be changed by a single splash of colour, like a horror movie can completely change the demeanour, appearance and personality of Claudia. At times she may appear innocent and angelic especially to Mrs Laderman, but this can quickly change.

My First Character: Mrs Laderman

My idea is that Mrs Laderman will be a mystical gypsy woman who is also a shapeshifter like the character 'Sam' which enables her to appear as all of the neighbours that Claudia meets, therefore she had Claudia to herself and is taking advantage of her magic, much like the character of 'Maryann' does to 'Tara'. This means that she fits into the fantasy theme that True Blood uses. The southern setting and secluded town means that she looks quite different to everyone else, however people are becoming used to weird events and strange people: she is normal compared to the fact humans now knowingly live among vampires.

I will need to utilise props and styling to make her character believable, and this will appeal to audiences because due to magic she won't look as old as she actually is, and she is also interesting, colourful and elaborate. I may also make her nails dirty in order to reinforce the fact that she lives in the south where there is dust and dirt and she is not 'prim' or 'proper'.

Key word

Awakening is my key word for Mrs Laderman. This is because she will have a crystal ball and practice black magic, awakening good and bad spirits. I also chose to signify this through makeup and so I intend to make it look as if she has eyes on her eyelids. Her colourfulness provides an awakening for the eyes of the audience. I imagined her stereotypical settings to be in a dark room filled with trinkets, or in a secluded forest where she can practice magic. In terms of styling, she will be dressed like a mystical gypsy woman with a bandana on her head, hooped earrings, a patterned skirt with lots of jewellery.
