Set in 1855, North and South still contains early Victorian Hairstyles that do not appear to have any form of long elongated hair at the back. The designs at the back are ornate and revolve around braids, buns and curls. In all the photos I have seen of this series, the women have a middle parting and no fringe, which also indicates it is early Victorian. There are adornments in the hair which is visible in the hair above, as they look like small red clips. Hair at the side is not scraped back but rather curled and incorporated into the bun.
Cranford
This is the BBC show 'Cranford', which was set in the early 1840's. This is definitely apparent through the fact that everyone seems to have a middle parting, followed by curls going towards the face. Many of the photos consist of the women wearing these bonnets, however it can be assumed that the hair at the back could be a low bun. The hairstyle at the top left however shows another middle parting, and curls that go round from the front to the back. They don't look like tight curls but rather large curls.
Jane Eyre
This 2006 series of Jane Eyre, set in the 1840's, has hairstyles that are both simplistic and elaborate combined. The only hairstyle she really seems to have is a middle parting, with straight hair covering the ears, which is then braided and incorporated into a more complicated braid at the back of the head which is either fastened to the head or wrapped around a bun.
